Chapter 14 – Eden

I almost felt bad for Rafe. Almost. But the fact that he’d been hedging his bets and Amara’s life was the prize... I shook my head. Even that small mercy was swept from my heart.

He was nothing but an overgrown child in the body of a man. Petulant and privileged, he walked through this life as if it owed him something. Not that he had to earn it. Not that he had to train or work for it. But that it would be given to him out of some skewed sense of familial beneficence and entitlement.

I shook my head as he struggled to his feet. Crossed my arms as he lurched from side to side with blood loss and a wounded thigh. When the color drained from his face, leaving him a ghost in his own skin, I rocked back on my heels.

We all waited in heavy silence as he made his way out of the room. When the doors finally shut behind him, I heard Momma tell Nico to send a couple guards after him.

Nico nodded. “With pleasure.” He turned and jogged towards the door. He stuck his head out. His voice was nothing but a murmur. When he pulled his head back in, he smiled. “Seems some of the guys have been catching a hard time from Rafe. They’re more than happy to guard him.”

Momma heaved a sigh. “What has been happening? Under our very noses? No wonder someone thought we were ripe for the picking. Discord sown within our own vineyard like sour grapes.” She shook her head, a scowl on her face.

“I can go through all of his information. Have answers for you tonight, Momma,” Nik offered.

Momma smiled sadly, nodded. “I know you are busy with your target, but I will take your help, Nikanya. Thank you.”

Massi helped Papa off the floor. The older man went to his wife and curled her into his arms. She laid her head on his shoulder. Tears gathered on her lashes. But she didn’t let them fall.

Watching Momma on the brink of tears did more to shake me than anything else had in this room in the last half hour. She was strong and resilient. I had no doubt that she would weather this storm with the same kind of brash gracefulness that she did everything else. But I also couldn’t imagine the heartache she must be feeling right now.

To have her youngest son say he felt like some kind of orphaned child. That he didn’t belong. That he essentially crapped all over the life and luxury her hard work had gained him.

For that alone, I would be taking more than my share when it came to my collection of his flesh. That he reduced this strong woman to tears ate at something inside me. He would pay for each bead of moisture that sparkled on her lashes.

She brushed at her eyes. Shook her head. With a quick glance around the room, she pinned me with her gaze.
